AVL LIST GmbH (AVL) was founded in 1948 by Prof. Dr. Dr. h.c. Hans List. AVL is the world’s largest privately owned and independent company for the development of powertrain systems as well as instrumentation and test systems with about 1,700 employees in Graz (over 600 graduated engineers) and a worldwide network of 45 representations and affiliates resulting in more than 4,000 employees Worldwide.

Powertrain development
AVL's Powertrain Engineering division activities are focused on the research, design and development of various conventional and advanced powertrains in the view of low fuel consumption, low emission, low noise and improved driveability.

Simulation methods
The Advanced Simulation Technologies division develops and markets the simulation methods which are necessary for the powertrain development work. This also includes real-time simulation models, which are needed for hardware-in-the-loop testing and development.

Instrumentation and tests
The Instrumentation and Test Systems division is an established manufacturer and provider of instruments and systems for powertrain and vehicle testing including combustion diagnostic sensors, gas analysis tools, optical systems as well as component and powertrain test bed.

Fuel cells for APUs
AVL has been active in fuel cell system research for approximately 10 years, during which a fully flexible test environment has been established for the development of low and high temperature fuel cells and components. Simulations tools were developed, which allow the performance optimisation and prediction of fuel cell components and systems.

AVL's research in the fuel cell system area particularly concentrates on the usage of this technology for APUs in various applications. For this reason, this research work is performed since the year 2000 in close co-operation with Topsoe Fuel Cell A/S.
